There are two primary approaches to letter writing: formal and informal. In this blog, we'll delve into the Informal letter format, exploring examples and samples.
To begin, let's understand what Informal letter writing entails and take a closer look at its format.
As the word Informal, itself says, is not formal, for example if you writing an Informal letter to a friend, in that, there should be no formality followed by you.
Quite simple, right?
This letter is mainly written for family, friends, relatives, and other close people.
In this type of letter, an easy conversation and tones are followed. They are very friendly chats that are done between sender and receiver.
This doesn’t mean that you should write casually or hasty.
You should follow certain things because this type of letter expresses how good you are in English? And in many competitive exams, this type of letter is given in order to test your English skills.
How to Write an Informal Letter?
An informal letter starts with the senders address. the address is generally written on the left side of the page according to today's block style letter.
The address must be written in 3-4 lines only. In address, don’t forget to write your Pin-code.
If you are writing a letter to anyone who lives abroad then the country’s name must also be mentioned.
At the end of the address, the date must be written. The date can be written in the following ways:
- 28th February 2021
- 28 February 2021
- February 28, 2021
Other than this no other form should be followed. Do not forget to put a comma(,) after every address line. And after the writing date, put the full stop(.).
An example is:
- Yadav house,
- 30 feet road,
- Bandra,
- Mumbai 400051,
- 28th February 2021.
Examples of Informal Letter.
Informal letter format - There is not any fix format for informal letter, here we will be discussing on the most used and general form of pattern, with the samples of the most attractive informal letters.
In an informal letter, the subject is not written, it directly starts from salutation.
The salutation is also written on the left side of the paper. there should be a gap of one line between the date and salutation.
In salutation “Dear” is the most common prefix that is used. But you can also use a prefix like “my dear, dearest, etc.
After you should write a person’s name. If he is your family member or relative you can also use their pet name.
But if you are writing a letter to an elder who is not close to you or you are writing an informal letter to your teacher.
Then with their name you should also add a prefix like “Mr/Mrs” with dear to show respect to them.
After writing the prefix then put a comma(,). For example (Dear Mom, Dearest Brother, Dear Mr. Laik, etc).
Informal letter Format - Body
After the salutation, the actual part of a letter-writing is started where your communication begins. The communication part is generally written in the three-paragraphs
Body of the letter.
- The first part is the opening part.
- The second part is a body of content.
- And the third one contains the closing part.
But before writing the paragraph you should follow some point that will make your letter more engrossing and fascinating.
1. The first thing that I already mentioned is that letter writing should be done in three-paragraph.
2. The second one is to use simple and short sentences. Don’t make it complicated. You should be clear about what you want to say.
3. The third one is to write neatly always remember that the receiver has to read it, so don't give them unnecessary trouble with your writing.
4. The last one is to give proper punctuation wherever it is required.
Keeping all these things in mind while writing a letter makes it more spellbinding and compulsive. Now let’s begin with the Informal letter format.

Informal Letter Format
1.The Opening
The opening starts with asking about the well-being of the person and family. These should not be more than 2-3 sentences and after that.
You should write the reason for writing the letter in one sentence. For example, “How have you been? I hope you are doing well”.
“What about your family? I hope they are also fine. I’m also fine here”. “I am writing this letter to you for inviting you and your family to my birthday party”.
Other than these you should avoid any other thing in this paragraph. The above example can mostly be used in any type of informal letter writing.
2. Body of Content
In this paragraph, you have to write in detail about the reasons for writing a letter. This paragraph is usually bigger than the first and last paragraph.
As I earlier mentioned, while writing use only simple and straightforward sentences.
Use the same tone as you used when you meet them in real life and if a person is older, then while writing you should use some respected words in the sentence.
3. The Closing
The closing part of a letter is the conclusion. Here you conclude the entire letter. It is a bit of a type where you say goodbye but saying goodbye should be meaningful.
Here you can invite the sender for the reply to your letter so that conversation should go on.
After finishing writing all paragraphs, you should move one line below and on the left side of the letter, you can write these three words "With Kind Regard's" and put a comma.
This will make the letter more professional. It is not compulsory to write this, you can skip it if you want. After this, your entire letter has almost been completed.
Informal Letter Format - Signature
Now, the signature part is only remaining in this sign-off with phrases. The most common is “Yours Faithfully”.
These phrases can be used in any type of letter. You can also use phrases like Your lovingly, Your sincerely, Your affectionately, etc.
And don’t forget to put a comma(,). After, you should write your name and then put a full stop. In this one thing must be noted that signature is always on the left side of the paper.
After this, your entire letter writing is completed. If you follow all things mentioned above you will be able to write a proper professional letter.
If you are referring to this blog for your exam then I am pretty much sure you will get full marks in the exam if you follow all points.
